AVOIDING FOOD WASTAGE

 Hi Assalamualaikum guys!

Today I will talk about one of the worst habits that seems normal in todays society and that is food wastage.

Its no secret that some of us wasted some food at some point of our life's with or without knowing that.
Wasting food is not only sin in Islam, but it also damages the environment, how you may ask? Well if you think about it, how many energy has put into that per gram of food. meaning that lets take a piece of meat of a cow as an example, the cow requires a lot of plants and water in order to grow and build mass. The labour work and time that has put into raising the cow is tremendously a lot. You're not only wasting the piece of meat and money but your also wasting all the food source or energy that the cow required to grow and the hard work and time behind those cow to raise, kill and process it. Its better off if you waste a gram of vegetables or fruits than a gram of meat because plants main energy source is just the sun (renewable energy) and water.

Here you can watch a video about energy efficiency:

The energy efficiency in plants is far far better than in meat since, a cow needs to build its bones, pumping of their bloods and more, and plants doesn't have that much complex of energy transfer besides photosynthesis process etc. I'm not saying don't eat meat but just don't waste any piece of meat that is left over on your plate. Its still a sin to waste fruits or vegetables but its less damaging to the environment.

Malaysia wastes 15,000 tons of food daily, which 3,000 tons of that is still good for consumption. Now if that doesn't seem a lot , in kilograms that is 13,607,771 kilograms of food wasted daily and 2,721,554 kilograms and honestly I feel ashamed that even me as a kid, I wasted some foods without realizing how damaging it does to the environment and a great sin. As a Malaysian, I feel guilty that we waste that amount of good food that can still be consumed. Now we cant turn back and change what has happened but we can teach these people who wastes food and change for the better future.

Tips on  how to avoid food wastage.

1) Shop Smart

Most people tend to buy more food than they need. People buy in bulk in order to save time and save the number of trips per week to the store. while this may be more convenient for you and save maybe a couple of ringgit in fuel, but this may lead to food wastage if your a bulk buyer.

2) Save the Leftovers

Some people isn't bothered to save some leftovers or they don't like to eat leftovers so they just throw it away. This is the mainly because they feel gross when the food is not 'new' or newly cooked. This sole reason why Malaysia has so many food wastage. Always save your leftovers after a dinner with your family, if there's any.

3) Store Foods Correctly

Improper storage can make the food go bad. Never leave cooked meals opened on the table without keeping it in the fridge or be kept properly in a Tupperware or something and place it under the food cover or else ants might eat it before you. Storing incorrectly might not be on purpose but try to store it correctly. This is also one of the reason of food wastage.

There are many more tips to avoid food wastage but this is the top 3 reasons on how to avoid wastage and its based on my experience and how my parent taught me.
